Provider Profile: Top Care Area Rankings
Internal Use Only

Based on our research, 90% of consumers identified a physician’s experience in performing procedures and treating conditions as one of the most important decision-making factors in choosing a provider.

Our Top Care Area rankings offer patients insight into a provider’s experience based on the number of procedures performed and the number of conditions treated by the provider. These rankings join existing quality indicators in a provider profile on, including education, board certification, years of practice, and patient satisfaction surveys.

Healthgrades determines Top Care Area rankings by comparing nationally the number of times a given provider performs a procedure or treats a condition against all providers nationally who perform the same procedure or treat the same condition.

Understand the Rankings

Top Care Area rankings are shown as a percentile, comparing providers with his or her peers nationwide based on billing claims data. For a given condition or procedure, performance categories are defined based on 80%, 90%, and 95% confidence intervals from the average patient volume for all providers in our database.

If we do not have sufficient billing claims data to determine Top Care Area rankings, or if the provider's specialty is one where volume of procedures/conditions isn’t relevant, then the provider profile displays the Experience Match section rather than Top Care Areas.

In the Top Care Areas section, we show each of the following measures per procedure you perform and condition you treat:

  1. Where the provider’s volume ranks nationally in terms of percentile
  2. Where that volume stands statistically relative to his or her peers, placing the provider into one of the following four categories: Very High, High, Normal and May Perform

In cases where our claims data is too low to derive statistical significance, we indicate May Perform and encourage the patient to contact the provider with questions about experience.

By default, we show the three procedures or conditions for which the provider has the highest volume in performing/treating, based on our claims data. Patients can also use the drop down option to view measures for another procedure the provider performs or condition the provider treats.

Data Source for Rankings

To determine Top Care Area rankings, we use public data from billing claims filed nationwide on behalf of a provider to either government or private health insurance. Healthgrades obtains billing claims data through a third party clearinghouse that receives anonymized claims data from the government or private health insurance to which the claims were originally filed.

When you add a condition and/or procedure, you can expect the corresponding Top Care Area ranking to display in your provider profile within 24 to 48 hours as long as we have a statistically significant volume of your claims data for that procedure and/or condition.

The Top Care Areas section might not display in your provider profile due to one or more of the following reasons:

  • Top Care Area rankings do not display for providers with specialties where volume of procedures/conditions lacks relevancy.
  • If you remove all the procedures/conditions related to the specialties for which we display Top Care Area rankings, then we do not display the Top Care Areas section in your provider profile.
  • When we do not have a sufficient volume of data to statistically evaluate you for ranking in any procedure or condition, then we do not display the Top Care Areas section in your provider profile.
